Lantern slides were the primary materials collected in visual resources collections during the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th. Most were produced using analog photographic processes to create positive transparencies on glass plates which were then housed together with a protective layer of glass for preservation. As record keeping systems have taken significant strides between then and now, we are left with the dilemma of how to keep, preserve and showcase these unique objects which have become artifacts of our imaging past.
For the past few weeks, I've been exploring this wonderful world to select and design a display for a group of images from these slides, to be unveiled at the open house event at VSW on October 13th!!
